Roberta Flack’s 1969 debut, First Take, was a jazz-tinged, ballad-heavy collection that suggested the singer and piano player was headed for a cult audience. But when Clint Eastwood put her haunting reimagination of Ewan MacColl’s English folk tune “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” in his 1971 film Play Misty For Me, he turned Flack into a chart-topping star. A mainstay on the soul and pop charts into the ’90s, she also recorded eclectic, powerful albums. Her duets with Donny Hathaway and Peabo Bryson also made for some of the most romantic music of the era.
