They called him the Clown Prince of Hip-Hop. But Long Island, New York-raised Biz Markie, who died on July 16, 2021 at the age of 57, treated being funny and down-to-earth as a discipline like any other. So while his peers of rap’s golden age might have more to say about quote-unquote important stuff, Biz was the only one out there brave enough to talk about picking your nose and how it feels kinda nice to be alone sometimes—you know, the real-life moments that usually end up on the cutting-room floor. He had feelings, for sure; he just wasn’t self-important enough to always think that digging deeply into them was gonna do anyone good, let alone himself. So he had fun (“Spring Again”), beatboxed with the best of them (“Make the Music With Your Mouth, Biz”), and sang off-key purposefully and majestically (the immortal signature hit (“Just a Friend”). But like his legendary Juice Crew compatriots (Big Daddy Kane, Kool G Rap), he could still brag with the best of them (“Biz Is Goin’ Off”), using humor to make screwfaced peers look ridiculous and fake in comparison.
