LIFE’S A TRIP by Trippie Redd – #NewMusicFriday

On the ballad “Together,” Trippie Redd belts woefully, “Together we can fight all these demons in my head,” ostensibly addressing the legion of self-identified outcasts who have flocked to him since his 6ix9ine collab “Poles 1469,” his feature on XXXTENTACION’s “F**k Love,” and his own ultra-dramatic breakup anthem “Love Scars.” The Ohio rapper is openly reflective of the hurdles his generation faces—the allure of drug use, the pain of young love, the yearning for social currency—but the album is ultimately an affirmation of his perseverance, and shows his musical whims stretch beyond rap. Though he does bar up in a more traditional sense on “Missing My Idols” and the Travis Scott collaboration “Dark Knight Dummo,” his melodies are as influenced by emo as his lyrics are. He’s nasally and unhinged on “Underwater FlyZone,” where he sings over soft, unaccompanied guitar strums, but Trippie seems most at home when his croon turns to an outright scream, as it does most notably on “BANG!”

About Trippie Redd

Originally from Canton, Ohio, rapper Trippie Redd (also known as Lil 14) first emerged in 2015 with a series of tracks online that hinted early on at the versatile style he would come to develop, one that blended elements of cloud rap and trap with the energy of punk and stadium rock.

Born in 1999, Trippie Redd was still a teenager when his rap career started, and he began releasing mixtapes and videos that would eventually lead him to viral Internet success and a deal with the Universal-distributed label Strainge Entertainment. After working on mixtapes like 2016’s Beast Mode and Awakening My InnerBeast, Trippie Redd delivered his most involved work with 2017’s A Love Letter to You. He also relocated from Ohio to Los Angeles as his fame grew. A Love Letter to You 2 soon followed, and debuted in the Top 40 of the Billboard 200 albums chart. ~ Fred Thomas
